No two communities experience disaster in the same way. Mental health needs, available resources, existing systems, and barriers to care are shaped by local circumstances. Understanding those differences is essential to building a response that actually works.
PreAct’s field assessments use qualitative interviews, stakeholder mapping, and engagement across healthcare, government, education, social services, and community organizations. This approach lets researchers hear directly from the people working within and experiencing local systems.
Field assessments can reveal challenges that may not show in quantitative data alone: from gaps in trained personnel and access to medication to provider burnout and barriers to reaching care. They can also identify existing strengths, trusted relationships, and community resources that can form the foundation for preparedness.
The purpose is not simply to identify what is missing. It is to understand the system as it exists, including its capacities, constraints, and local knowledge.
By grounding research in community, PreAct develops recommendations that are practical, context-specific, and responsive to the people and systems they are intended to support.
